But today, many creative agencies and in-house departments are catering to telecommuters. Savvy employers know they must be accommodating if they want to attract and retain top talent, as many workers are seeking more flexible and balanced work schedules.In fact, nearly seven in 10 creative professionals said they would prefer to work from home or abedrngnisher noncompany site more frequently than they currently do, according to The Creative Groups Creative Workplace survey.But telecommuting is a perk you need to implement thoughtfully. Leading a creative gruppe that may include a mix of on-site employees, telecommuters, fully remote workers, freelancers and consultants is a tall order. How do you create a cohesive gruppe when every one is scattered across town - or in different countries? How do you build camaraderie, foster a positive workplace culture, and provide leadership and beistand from afar?Its not easy. Fortunately, the following five strategies can help you manage a dispersed team. Several of the recommendations include insights from two experts who know how to make the most of telecommuting arrangements Ashleigh Axios, design exponent at Automattic, an all-remote company with more than 700 people working across the world, and Deepa Subramaniam, co-founder of Wherewithall, an advising company dedicated to helping organizations operate effectively and grow.1. Make communication a top priorityIf your team members have different schedules and work at various locations, you need to make sure pertinent information is easily - and frequently - communicated. Otherwise, you risk having a disjointed and unproductive team.Creative leaders need to take time to communicate expectations, set up processes and tools for documenting and sharing information, and make sure no remote or internal worker feels isolated or siloed, Subramaniam says. Most important, managers need to provide context for every project.That context, according to Subramaniam, includes the projects history and who on the team is responsible for what. She says contextual information should be documented in a central location, like a Google Doc or a wiki, that all team members can access. Other basic information, such as project timelines and team members work schedules, should also be current and available. A simple online calendar app, for example, can help ensure that everyone on your team, from the telecommuter to the on-site employee to the freelancer, can easily share and view the latest schedule details in one place.Axios adds that project teams at Automattic use apps like Slack to share information about their schedules and work progress. Reading each others status updates asynchronously is how we conduct our ver sion of the daily standup meeting, she says.No matter the technology you use, everyone needs to be on the same page about how the tools work and why theyre being used. And be open to emerging communication options. Dont be afraid to try out tools and then retire them, Subramaniam says. Keep in daily contact, but dont micromanageWhen creating a calendar for your team, set times for when everyone will meet (whether in person or virtually), and when you will check in with team members individually. Even better, pick up the phone for a quick call. Speaking with someone to discuss the details of a project or convey an important message is often more effective - and efficient - than typing out the words. Its also a way to build personal rapport with colleagues.However, be careful not to micromanage. Telecommuters need to feel confident that their manager believes they will work as hard as they would in a regular office, logging similar hours, hitting deadlines and maintaining productivity. If youre unnecessarily checking in several times a day with remote workers just to see how things are going, those employees may feel like you dont trust them.HIRING? LET US HELP3. Make time for face timeIts important to bring your entire team together on occasion. If your group is widely distributed, schedule a full team event at least annually. Thats what Automattic do es. Twice a year, the whole company gets together for a weeklong grand meetup, Axios says.However, those big companywide gatherings arent the only time Automattic employees convene. For example, Axios says that when shes kicking off a new project, she likes to get her colleagues together in the same physical space so they can bond and get to know each other.That approach is especially valuable for team members who rarely see each other in person or do not typically collaborate on projects. It helps us all get a good sense of each others tone and communication styles and sense of humor, so we understand each other better when we are communicating by email and text, Axios says.For everyday face time with your team, consider videoconferencing. Seeing your workers - even if its virtually - helps you, and them, feel less disconnected. It also helps to avoid miscommunication when giving feedback, because your workers can read your facial expressions and body language. Why Separating Your Work Life and Home Life Is So ImportantFirst things first- before we talk about how to keep your work life from infringing on your personal life when you work from home, lets talk about why, exactly, thats so important.It Helps You Avoid lassitudoPeople cant work 24/7. They need to have other things going on in their life, says Kim Perkins, organizational psychologist and Chief Behavioral Scientist at work and culture consulting firm NOBL. According to Perkins, that always-working attitude can cause a variety of negative outcomes, including sleep issues, relationship problems, and burnout.Taking time away from work can give your mind and body the time you need to rest, recover, and give the other areas of your life (like your sleep) the attention they deserve- and when you get back to work, youll have renewed energy to get t hings done.It Lets You UnwindYour home is supposed to be a place to relax- but for people who work from home, that can be a challenge.We have evolved to pay close attention to surroundings that were in- and that gives us cues about how were supposed to act, says Perkins. So if everywhere and everything in your house reminds you of work, youre going to feel like you need to work all the time and youre not going to be able to get the rest and relaxation you need to feel your best. For example, working in bed might feel comfortable, but if you start to associate your bed with your work, it will be harder for your brain to relax and go to sleep when its time for lights out.Creating a clear sense of separation between work life and home life, both physically and psychologically, can make it easier for you to shut down and relax at the end of the work day.Its Good for the People in Your LifeIf youre unattached or live alone, the person whos going to be impacted most by your work-life bala nce is you. If you have a family, things get a little mora complicated.You need to be able to shut off and give the people closest to you the time and attention they deserve otherwise, your work can have a seriously negative impact on your relationships. A lot of people who work from home...are constantly checking their phone and working, says Perkins. Thats going to make the partner and family feel a lot less listened to and a lot less valued.Tips to Keep Your Work From Messing With Your Personal LifeClearly, keeping your work life from infringing on your personal life is a must if you want to feel happy, healthy, and balanced. But how, exactly, do you do that? Here are a few tips from people whove made it work.1. Work Parallel SchedulesWhen you work from home- and do so around the clock- it can feel like you and your family are ships passing in the night. The best way to combat that? Keeping similar schedules.I work on my business while my husband is at work. That gives me 10 hour s to do my thing, says Anna Kat Napier, founder of Boss Girl Launch Pad. I need to be able to stop my work when he gets home so that we can catch up with each other and spend dinnertime together.If you live with a partner or children, its important to spend some dedicated time with them rather than always splitting your attention between family and work obligations. Scheduling parallel hours (for example, cranking out work while your kids are at school or during the same hours your spouse or significant other is at their job) will allow you to get things done but still have time to connect with your family members when they get home. That kind of alignment shows your spouse or family members that you care about them, says Perkins, and are making it a priority to have time together without distractions. Just keep in mind that working parallel schedules only works if you focus on work when its work time and are ready and willing to shut down when its over. 2. Set a Firm Stopping Point It can be easy to lose track of time when youre working from home. And when you finally take a breather and look at the clock, somehow hours have passed- and youve worked far longer than you intended. Its so easy to tell yourself just five more minutes or just one more email. But working crazy hours can throw your body out of whack.Your body is used to operating on a schedule, says Perkins. Kids get up at the same time, they go to school at the same time, and this builds these rhythms and habits- and its very easy to know what youre supposed to be doing and when youre supposed to be doing it, she adds. Even as adults, we need that for a sense of consistency- because otherwise it just takes too long to figure out where we are and what were supposed to be doing. Setting a firm stopping point every day- and sticking to it- can help you keep your work in check (and keep it from infringing on the things you want and need to get done after work).Katharine Bolin, owner and digital absatzwi rtschaft director at Sweet Reach Media, has platzset a firm stopping point for herself at 5 PM. If she feels tempted to work into the evening hours, she reminds herself that her personal life actually benefits her job in the long run. I need to have a life outside of work, because thats where inspiration comes from, and thats what will ultimately keep me doing good work in my work life.3. Have a Trigger to End the Work Day (and Start Personal Time)Triggers (or cues) can be a powerful way to form new habits. Having a bung that you do every day when you finish work will send a signal to your body and brain that work is officially over- and its time to move on and enjoy your personal time.At the end of the day, I make a to-do list for tomorrow before shutting down my computer and walking downstairs, says Megan Winkler, the owner of Limelight Visibility Marketing. For me, its the virtual equivalent to the separation that a commute home gives. What you do as a routine to trigger the end of work time and start of personal time is up to you. My end-of-day routine is to take my dog for a walk around our neighborhood, but you can do a five-minute meditation, clean up your office, or, like Winkler, organize your tasks into a to-do list for the following day. What you do is less important than doing it every day. The routine establishes a habit that after I do this, Im going to relax. And so it creates some separation between your work self and your personal self, says Perkins. And you need this in order to, again, fully relax and get your mind on other things.4. Shut the Office DoorEver heard the saying out of sight, out of mind? Well, that also applies to your work space.One of the tricks I use to separate my personal from professional life while I work from home is to shut my office door during weekends, says Angela Zade, digital marketing manager for travel software company Trondent Development Corp. Its her way of telling herself The Office Is ClosedIf you use a ded icated room as your home office, step away at the end of the day and leave all your work gear, like your laptop and work phone, behind. In other words, literally and figuratively shut the door on work so that you can pursue personal projects, family time, or just good, old-fashioned relaxing without feeling the pull of the office.If you dont have an enclosed workspace, no worries You can create some physical separation with a screen or a well-placed bookshelf. And if thats not an option either, just cleaning up your ongoing work can help you avoid the pull of your desk. According to Perkins, many people leave their work out in plain sight, making it harder to disconnect. Clearing off your desk and putting your work out of view (for example, putting your laptop and any loose papers in a desk drawer) can help you create a visual and psychological sense of separation- even if you cant physically close off your workspace from the rest of your home.5. Schedule Screen-Free TimeOne of my b iggest challenges in creating separation between my work and home life is the constant screen time. If Im on (or even near) my laptop, tablet, or phone, I have to fight the urge to check my email- even if Im supposed to be off duty and enjoying down time.This bad habit can be particularly annoying for my husband no one wants to have a one-sided conversation with their partner while they mindlessly scroll through their Gmail app.Thats why weve made screen-free time a non-negotiable in my house. Having a set time when phones, laptops, tablets, and TV screens are a no-go allows me to fully disconnect from my work and digital life- and fully engage with my real life. When my husband gets home from the office, we both make sure to put our phones away and enjoy some screen-free time to catch up on each others days. We also try to schedule at least a few screen-free Saturdays a month and I even tried the distraction-free iPhone to stem the temptation to spend too much time staring at a scr een.When you work from home, its so easy to be tuned into work 24/7. But remember, your home is your home first- and your office second. And if you want to have the work-life balance you crave (and deserve), you need to treat it that way.

Our new visualization highlights the yawning gap between the top 1% of earners and the bottom 99% for every state in the country.We gathered the numbers for our visualization from theEconomic Policy Institute (EPI), a nonpartisan think tank devoted to informing fiscal policy discussions. We plotted the average annual income for the top 1% of wage earners in each state. Then we added the average income for the bottom 99%, essentially dividing the entire workforce into two groups. The gray bar on our visual therefore the size of the gap between the highest earners and everybody else, letting you quickly and easily see the extent of income inequality across the US.Indeed, the gap is q uite staggering. Across all 50 states plus Washington DC, the average difference is $1,047,435, a factor of 21.4 times. The states with the worst problems should come as no surprise Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts have well-documented wealth inequality problems. One notable state at the top of the chart is Wyoming. We previously used EPI data to single outJackson Holeas the most unequal location in the entire country, no doubt due to its status as a retirement destination for the uber rich.Theres another interesting trend lying just below the surface of our visualization. Take a look at the states with the lowest wealth inequality, toward the bottom of the visual. West Virginia, Mississippi, Maine, Kentucky and Alabama have the smallest gaps between the wealthiest 1% and everyone else. But these same states are widely known for theirrural povertyand poor overallpublic health. In fact, the bottom 99% earn some of the lowest wages anywhere in the country.The states with the l owest wealth inequality are also the poorest states in the country, which suggests one of two things. Either a rising tide lifts all boats, meaning the wages of the extremely well-paid inflates what everyone else makes too. Or states like West Virginia, where the average annual income for 99% of the population is a paltry $34,987, have economies that depress the wages of the top 1% too. Regardless of how we think about the correlation, moving across state lines to earn a higher wage seems like a plausible answer, even iffewer Americansare willing to move for jobs.Lets add one more layer of complexity. Our visual says nothing about the cost of living. For example, the bottom 99% of workers in Ohio make $46,157, butour recent analysisof housing prices indicates thats plenty to afford a median-priced home in all of Ohios large cities.
